|FIRST ON WGIL: Fire in Below-Zero Weather Causes Damage to Hawthorne Center Business
|POSTED 10:33am 1/3/10 A business located in Galesburg's Hawthorne Center is heavily damaged following a fire under what officials call not exactly ideal conditions.
Firefighters were called to 583 Hawthorne Court around 6:30am Sunday, after eyewitnesses told 911 the front of the building was fully engulfed in flames, and remained on scene for several hours.
Galesburg Fire Captain Todd Peterson tells WGIL his crews were able to get the blaze at what is now Pat Kennedy Builders under control in about a half-hour, and temperatures around 10 degrees below zero didn't cause any problems until they were well into fighting the fire.
"Once you get water out and get flowing (problems can start)," Peterson said. "Also, you have problems with your...breathing apparatus if you get a little bit of snow in it or else you've been inside and it gets wet, once you move outside, it freezes, then you've got valves that are sticking."
Peterson says much like you would do at home to combat frozen pipes, firefighters have to make sure they're always running water through hoses to make sure they can still be used.
Peterson says there was a lot of material inside the front of the building that suffered damage, and the porch on the front of the building eventually collapsed in.
He says roughly the first 20 yards of the building suffered fire damage, but the rest of the facility likely suffered smoke and water damage.
An exact cause of the fire isn't known, as an investigation is ongoing, and no one was hurt.
