U of I Still Wants Its Money
Illinois' flagship university is still waiting for state funds.

The state owes the University of Illinois roughly $450,000,000. Gov. Pat Quinn has promised to get cash to the university as soon as possible, but university officials say they haven't seen a substantial payment since November. U. of I. spokesman Tom Hardy says that’s when the state finally paid off what it owed the university for Fiscal Year 2009.

It's a problem that State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington), a candidate in the Republican primary for governor, says must be resolved quickly. He says it's the fault of Chicago politicians. "The Chicago politicians, once again, passed a budget that wasn't balanced," Brady said. "Gov. Quinn has failed to manage the state's finances in a responsible way, and now all the people who are counting on the State of Illinois to live up to its obligations are left holding the bag."

Recently U. of I. trustees voted to increase undergraduate fees and room and board fees, something Hardy says is not related to the backlog of cash owed by the state.

The university is looking to furlough days in order to save about $17 million.
