Voter Registration Numbers Up
Registration numbers for the Feb. 2 primary are up compared to four years ago. In 2006, around 7.3 million people registered to vote. This year, nearly 300,000 more people are registered putting the total at 7.5 million. (These numbers are rounded, so they don't add up perfectly.)

State Board of Elections Executive Director Dan White says the registration numbers may not be the best indicator for turnout on Election Day. He says off-year elections generally have smaller turnout numbers than presidential elections. White calls this year's numbers "decent," but points out that the numbers shot up when Barack Obama was on the ballot, so he didn't expect recent numbers to exceed 2008 numbers.

Even so, 40,000 people have already taken advantage of early voting, and 65,000 people have voted absentee. Deadlines for both are Thursday (Jan. 28). Grace period voting will remain open until Tuesday (Jan. 26).
