Mission Leader Talks of Heroes in Haiti Quake
DeKALB, Ill. (AP) -- Harold Jerde has heroes in Haiti.

The 77-year-old DeKalb man has been to Haiti numerous times during the past 11 years on mission trips with Christ Community Church.

He and his fellow volunteers have built schools and hospitals, and support an orphanage there. And he says it will take an immense amount of aid for recovery efforts.

He says the hospital and orphanage still stand after the earthquake, but the wall behind the girl's dormitory at the orphanage is down.

The residents there have a single armed guard for protection and the other guard's whereabouts are unknown.

Jerde says he's met all of his heroes while on mission trips, such as the ones he has taken to Haiti.

He shares his stories in his book, "My Life as a Sidekick to Heroes," which was published last year.
