Gas Prices Moving Upward
The price of gasoline in the State of Illinois took a big jump with the start of the new year.

The AAA Chicago Motor Club's Fuel Gage Survey for January indicates the price of a gallon of regular unleaded is up 17-cents from December, to a statewide average of $2.84.

If that's not enough, the price is 93-cents higher than last January, when it was $1.91.

But, before you decide you're going to complain, AAA spokesperson Beth Mosher says not many people are.

"People are willing to pay this," Mosher said. "We really, over the course of the past couple years, haven't seen people change their driving habits or conserve until prices were well over $4,and we're nowhere near that mark yet."

Mosher says the higher gas prices are due to the higher price of crude oil. She says AAA expects crude oil to continue to increase for awhile yet.

Galesburg-area gas stations aren't as high this weekend as they have been in the last week or so. Most stations are selling unleaded for between $2.65 and $2.67 a gallon, while stations in Monmouth are roughly a dime a gallon higher.
