Galesburg Mayor Gives First Recognition Awards
Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza has taken on some pretty serious tasks since becoming mayor last year, from, he admits, disbanding unnecessary commissions to what he calls giving direction to others, but he says he also wants to recognize people doing good deeds who might not otherwise get a lot of recognition.

Garza started what he calls the "Mayor's Recognition Initiative" at Monday night's City Council meeting, by giving organizers of a free community Christmas dinner last month the first of those recognition awards.

Garza says he needs help finding local residents doing such good work, though, so he's turning to aldermen.

"I would encourage all of the council members to please submit, from your respective wards, individuals, teams, groups, organizations that you believe should be acknowledged, even though they don't do it for that purpose," Garza said. "It's still nice to bestow the recognition on them."

Garza says he wants to simply recognize what he called "everyday people," and says they're not necessarily star athletes or other types of people like that.

Garza recognized the Second Baptist Church, members of the Knox College Student Body, and the People in Galesburg organization for putting together the holiday meal.
