IDOT Recognized for Going Green
The Illinois Department of Transportation is turning green. In recognition of its sustainability, IDOT received the Green Government Award in the category of sustainable transportation from the state's Green Government Coordinating Council.

The award was based on initiatives the department implemented in 2009. IDOT created a diesel vehicle fleet in which 100 percent of the vehicles run on bio-diesel fuel. The fleet includes 741 alternative-fuel vehicles, 36 gas and electric hybrids, and one E-85 electric vehicle.

A sustainable practices manager position was also created within the department to identify sustainable and green practices. Spokeswoman Marisa Kollias says the goal for the green practices is not only to be environmentally friendly, but to save money.
