"Electrofishing" Along Illinois River
Environment experts on the Illinois River say they've been keeping track of the fish population and water quality for more than 50 years. Mike McClelland, a large river ecologist with the Illinois Natural History Survey's biological station at Havana, says electrofishing -- sending a current into the water -- safely stuns the fish so they will come to the surface and get scooped up during the research. The fish are then dropped back into the water alive.

McClelland says the nation's ecological push in the 1970s -- with clean-water legislation -- marked a change from an Illinois River which was choked with pollution.

McClelland says the work being done can position wildlife managers to respond to threats, such as Asian carp.
