Expert: Race for Governor is Close
The race for governor is a close match for both the republicans and democrats. In a field of six candidates running for the GOP nomination, no real front runner has emerged. Recent poll numbers put state Senators Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), Jim Ryan, and Andy McKenna all with less than 20 points and all within the margin of error. The other two candidate are Dan Proft and Adam Andrzejewski.

The race between Gov. Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes is drawing close as well. Hynes has gained momentum in the past week, and is separated from Quinn by just four points, again within the margin of error.

Public Affairs Director at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Charlie Wheeler, says Hynes has the opportunity and the drive to unseat Quinn in the primary. An incumbent governor has not been unseated in a primary election in Illinois since 1976.

Professor Emeritus of Political Science Kent Redfield says the races are too close to call at this point, but he says voter turnout on Feb. 2 will play a significant role. Redfield says many voters are undecided and that could mean they will decide not to vote in the primary.

Wheeler and Redfield took part in a political forum Tuesday on the University of Illinois at Springfield campus about the election.
