Index Shows Signs of Economic Improvement
The state's Flash Index is up, leading an economist to look more brightly to what's ahead in 2010.

The Flash Index for December hit 91.2, up from 91.0 in November. University of Illinois Institute of Government and Public Affairs economist Fred Giertz says the emphasis should be on "slight" when calling this a slight improvement. He says that more importantly, December marks the third month in a row that the Flash Index has shown improvement, giving an indication that the index could show improvement for the upcoming months. Giertz says it could take a year or more before Illinois' economy is once again strong.

After 26 straight months of the Flash Index dropping, it started creeping back up in October. The dividing line between growth and contraction is 100, so these increases in the Flash Index are not showing economic growth in Illinois, but they are showing the economic decline is slowing.
