Natioal Investigation of Illinois Cigarette Heist
EAST PEORIA, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say the search for millions of dollars of cigarettes stolen from a warehouse in East Peoria has reached as far as the New York and Miami areas.

Detective Kevin Beckman of the East Peoria Police said Wednesday that stolen semi trucks and trailers that have been recovered include one trailer found abandoned on the New Jersey Turnpike near Newark, N.J.

Police discovered the break-in at the Federal Warehouse Co. Sunday afternoon, and say they believe it occurred early that morning.

Police believe five to 10 burglars gained entry by cutting a hole in the roof, cut off the alarm system, and hauled off the cigarettes in stolen semitrailers.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI, and Illinois State Police are involved in the investigation.
