Students Raise Money for Haiti -- Even in Adverse Circumstances
Raising $3,210.82 for Haiti may seem doable for a lot of Illinois schools, but it was a tough task for one particular school. Northwest Elementary in LaSalle set a goal of $1,000 last week, and raised triple that amount, despite the fact that 75 percent of the students come from low-income families.

Michela Ossola, a second grader, says she and her mother talked about donating, and deciding to give the money they'd been saving to spend at garage sales. "Haiti needs it better than I do," she explained. She giggled that she was looking forward to seeing other kids shave the head of assistant principal Chris Maier, who says he's willing to go bald if it was a good incentive for the kids to bring in donations. Ossola said, "We can't wait for Mr. Maier to be bald!"

Maier says he won't go cold: The third grade teachers gave him a Cubs stocking hat. The money is being given to the American Red Cross, which will send it to Haiti.
