Will Poor Be Hurt by GOP Governor Candidates' Proposed Budgets?
Republican candidates for governor intend to rely primarily or entirely on spending cuts to rectify a state budget that is $13 billion short. What will that mean for the poor?

Candidate Jim Ryan says he will not throw under the bus the poor, elderly, disabled, and those without health insurance. "I said that when I announced my candidacy that I'm not gonna leave the poor behind as governor," he said. "I'm gonna work hard to try to represent the marginalized in our society, so I think it's a question of where your heart's at, your commitment to public service, and serving those that are less fortunate."

Other candidates are also promising not to sacrifice the poor.

* Adam Andrzejewski says if the state is no longer taking care of political insiders and bureaucrats, it will have the money to serve people in need.

* State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) says social service agencies can still provide services with 10 percent less.
