IDOT Chief Hopes 2010 Brings Illinois Long-Awaited Infrastructure Projects
Roads, bridges, and public buildings could be built around Illinois in the New Year - projects which some people were hoping for in 2009 and earlier.

Gary Hannig, who became secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation shortly after Governor Pat Quinn succeeded the ousted Rod Blagojevich, says a big difference is having a governor legislators trust.

Hannig says he is not disappointed 2009 came to an end without a great deal of new construction: "The big capital bill didn't pass until late June; the governor signed it sometime in July," Hannig said. "For practical purposes - for construction purposes - the summer was over. It was very difficult to get any big project up and running."

Hannig says part of the reason is the lengthy contract-letting process. He expects the state will open bids in January for spring projects.
