| Predicted Snow Blankets Galesburg Area |
POSTED 7:50 a-m 1/7/10 The National Weather Service predicted a lot of snow for the Galesburg area, and that's what it got. Weather service reports show nearly seven inches of snow fell in some parts of the region overnight Wednesday and more snow is apparently on the way Thursday. The highest total in Knox County as of 6:45 Thursday morning was 6.3 inches of snow in Altona reported by trained weather observers. Galesburg at 6 a-m (Thursday) had received 5.5 inches, prompting city officials to issue a SNOW EMERGENCY, which is also in place in Knoxville. Several other communities received between 4 and 6 inches, with Farmington getting 6.5 - the highest total in the area reported by the NWS. Peoria had 5.8 inches as of 6 a-m and Gilson fared a little better than others with 3.8 inches on the ground as of 5:50 Thursday morning. The forecast, which includes a WINTER STORM WARNING in effect until 6:00 Friday morning, says 2 to 3 more inches of snow could fall on top of what's already come down in the Galesburg area. Complicating that will be wind gusts that will cause blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility on the roads. The snow should taper off by Friday afternoon after perhaps another one inch of snow falls Thursday night, but it will be very cold with a low of 8 degrees Thursday night and wind chill readings as low as -15. Friday's high temperature is expected to reach 11, and with the blustery conditions, the wind chill readings will be in the 6 to 16 below-zero range. |
