GOP Leader Endorses Lt. Gov. Candidate
Republican legislative leaders are trying to get State Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine) elected lieutenant governor -- a position which has remained unfilled since Pat Quinn was elevated to the governor’s office a year ago.

The primary is Feb. 2. Murphy is the only Republican legislator running for lieutenant governor, while the gubernatorial primary includes two Senate Republicans.

Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) says she normally does not make endorsements in primaries but is making an exception in Murphy's case. While the primaries do not join the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, Murphy is running in tandem with Andy McKenna. Radogno says there are several qualified candidates for governor, including McKenna.

Murphy says regardless of what you think of Illinois' laws to succeed a governor, the position of lieutenant governor is going to be filled with the 2010 election, and the debate over whether the structure should change or whether the office is necessary can wait for another day.
