AFSCME Wants Investigation of Prison Issues
AFSCME, the largest state-employees union, wants hearings on the prison early-release scandal. AFSCME Executive Director Henry Bayer said in a letter to Illinois Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) and House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) that the scandal reveals a system spiraling out of control.

AFSCME spokesman Anders Lindall says the union is calling for the House and Senate to convene a special joint task force to investigate the early-release program, plus prison overcrowding and understaffing that the union has long opposed. Lindall cited an incident last month at the Pinkneyville prison in which an employee was held hostage by an inmate for hours before a tactical team shot and killed the inmate.

Going a step further, State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), a Republican candidate for governor, wants a special session of the Committee of the Whole, and Dillard thinks the committee should have subpoena powers.
