Chicago Mayoral Candidates Thin Out
(IRN)-The field is clearing in the race for mayor of Chicago.

U.S. Representative Danny K. Davis dropped out on New Year's Eve, throwing his support to former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun, leaving her as the only major African-American candidate.

Kent Redfield, political science professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield, says Braun will have to do more than just be the black candidate. "She has to appeal to independents. She has to have a broader base than just the core of the African-American vote," Redfield says. He says Braun's one term as senator was widely perceived as "an undistinguished term," and that fact will be used against her.

The other major candidates are folks people have heard of around the state: Former congressman and former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, former State Senator Miguel del Valle, who is now the city clerk, and former U.S. Senate candidate Gery Chico.

Election Day for city elections statewide is Feb. 22; a runoff, if needed, will be April 5.
