MAP Task Force Created
(IRN)-A newly formed task force will take a closer look at how to get additional dollars to college students who hail from low income families.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education's Monetary Award Program task force has been formed to discuss a proposal by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission that would use capital investment bonds to increase the number of MAP grants and increase the amount of those grants. The bonds would be paid back through tax revenues from college students who graduate with the help of MAP grants.

But not everyone is on board with the plan. The Illinois Community College Board opposes the plan, saying it would end up costing the state more in the long run. The plan calls for $100 million in bonds, which the ICCB says could leave Illinois owing $139 million. The ICCB also argues that given the poor economy and high unemployment rate, there is no guarantee graduates will find work.

The plan also relies on General Revenue Funding for MAP to remain at $400 million.

Still, the ISAC contends that the plan would work because those given a MAP grant are more likely to enroll in school, graduate with a degree and go on to higher paying jobs and a higher taxation rate then those with only a high school diploma.

The MAP task force plans to meet three more times to discuss the ISAC's proposal before reporting their findings to the Board of Higher Education in February.
