Illinos' Economy Makes Small Improvements
(IRN)-An early indicator of the Illinois economy shows improvement.

The University of Illinois Flash Index is at 94.9, up from 94.2 a month ago, and up from the recessionary low of 90.0 15 months ago. The index rose for the seventh month in a row.

The index, which takes into account personal and corporate income and retail sales, comes out the first business day of each month. The dividing line between economic contraction and growth is 100, so Illinois is still in recovery mode.

U. of I. economist Fred Giertz says this is not a sign of economic strength, but it is a sign of improvement.

Giertz says fears of deflation and a double-dip recession have mostly dissipated, but unemployment remains stubbornly high, and is expected to decline slowly.
