Taylorville Plant a No Go for Senate
(IRN)-On its way out the door, the Illinois Senate said no to a coal to gas plant in Taylorville.

The $3.5 billion Taylorville Energy Center would convert coal to gas, then use the gas to generate electricity an experimental process.

State Senatpr Kyle McCarter says one of the problems would have been a deal to require higher electricity prices. "Yes, there's a cap of 2 percent for residents. But you're talking about increases to commercial and industrial users that [are] going to kill jobs in this state," he said. He estimated higher electricity prices would cost Archer-Daniels-Midland $5 million a year.

Environmentalists had also opposed the plan.
Labor supported it, because it was supposed to generate 2,400 construction jobs and 155 permanent jobs.

Tenaska, the company planning the project, isn't walking away yet. Tenaska is evaluating its options, having already sunk $40 million into planning. The state has also spent $23 million in coal development funds.

The vote in the Illinois Senate was 18 yeas, 33 no, four present.
