SIU Trustee Keith Sanders Dies
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- The Southern Illinois University system is mourning the death of one of its trustees.

The university says former Illinois Board of Higher Education executive director Keith Sanders of Spring Grove died Wednesday from complications linked to the lung ailment pulmonary fibrosis. He was 71.

Sanders had been on SIU's Board of Trustees since 2004.
Board Chairman Roger Tedrick called the Benton native and SIU-Carbondale alumnus "a passionate and eloquent advocate" for the university.

Sanders headed the state Board of Higher Education from 1998 until his retirement in 2002. He also served in various roles in the University of Wisconsin system, including chief operating officer.

Survivors include his wife and a son.
SIU is planning a memorial service.
