Illinois State Trooper Injured in Traffic Accident
ATLANTA, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities say an Illinois State Police trooper remains hospitalized in critical condition as a result of a weather related accident that occurred early Tuesday.

State Police Lt. Tom Gartland says the trooper, whose name is not being released, was injured when his unmarked sport utility vehicle collided with semitrailer truck on Interstate 55, south of Atlanta. The trooper is assigned to District 13 in DuQuoin.

According to Gartland, the trooper was driving south when the SUV crossed the median into the path of a northbound truck. The driver of the semitrailer was not injured.

Authorities say there were three dogs in the SUV at the time of the accident. One was killed.

Gartland says the crash occurred during a snowstorm, and is under investigation.
