Local State Representative Concerned with Tax Increase
Illinoisans should prepare for an income tax increase in the near future.

Lawmakers in Springfield passed the increase in the last few hours before the end of session for the 96th General Assembly.

Local state Representative Don Moffitt, a Republican, tells WGIL not does the measure allow government to grow, the sequence for passing an increase should have been different.

"The legislation that passed raises the state income tax, course from the current three percent up to five percent but rather than reducing the size of government it allows growth each year for the next four yeas, technically I think it's 1.7 percent so for four years the legislation gives authority to try and continue to grow this budget and it should be the other way around, we should be reduicing the size of the budget."

Moffitt adds that if the legislation were really good, it could have waited until the new members of the 97th General Assembly were sworn in, but instead the election was basically circumvented.
