Nicarico Father Against Repealing Death Penalty
CHICAGO (AP) -- The father of a 10 year old girl who was raped and murdered in 1983 says repealing the death penalty in Illinois is "the wrong thing to do'' and a mistake.

Jeanine Nicarico's father, Thomas Nicarico, tells the Chicago Sun-Times that the man who pleaded guilty in his daughter's death has "earned capital punishment." Brian Dugan also has been convicted of two other unrelated murders. Suburban Chicago jurors gave Dugan the death penalty in Nicarico's case in 2009.

A bill to abolish the death penalty in Illinois awaits only the signature of Gov. Pat Quinn.

Thomas Nicarico tells the newspaper that Dugan "earned the most severe punishment the state can give, and now the state is taking it away." Nicarico says the death penalty acts to deter criminals.
