County Clerk Disputes Election Commission Decision
The Knox County Clerk says the Galesburg City Election Commission didn't get the decision to remove a candidate for a seat on the Galesburg City Council from the April election ballot right.

County Clerk Scott Erickson issued a statement yesterday accusing the commission of using information that is, quote, "not accurate as it applies to Election law" in removing Chuck Reynolds from the 3rd Ward election race against incumbent Russell Fleming.

The Commission says it removed Reynolds from the ballot because his statement of economic interest included with his petitions wasn't properly filed.

Erickson says it was, and that his office followed the law.
He says typically, a statement of economic interest filed with the County Clerk results in a receipt being given, that's part of the form. Erickson says because Reynolds used a form downloaded off the internet, it didn't have a receipt stub.

Erickson says the statement was dated and stamped when filed in his office, and they simply gave the portion of the statement with Reynolds' signature on it back to him as a receipt, which was then filed with the Election Commission, and therefore, all the requirements were fulfilled.

Erickson says Reynolds, quote, "should not be deprived of his chance to run for election" and should be allowed to stay on the ballot.

The commission did not rule on another allegation by Fleming that he didn't have enough signatures to be on the ballot. Both Reynolds and Fleming have until Monday to appeal.
