New Health Insurance Tops 1,000 Employees
CHICAGO (AP) -- A new Illinois program for uninsured people with medical problems now has more than 1,000 people enrolled.

The program works like any health insurance plan and is funded by the federal government under the Affordable Care Act.

Starting this month, the Illinois Preexisting Condition Insurance Plan has a new coverage option with a $1,000 deductible. That's in addition to the original $2,000 deductible option.

Benefits include primary and specialty care, hospital care and prescription drugs. Preventive care such as annual physicals and mammograms are covered without copays.

Legal residents who've been uninsured for at least six months are eligible. Applicants must show they're uninsured because of a pre-existing medical condition.

Monthly premiums depend on a person's age, where they live and whether they use tobacco.
