Preservation of Galesburg Church Sought
GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- Central Congregational Church in Galesburg is deteriorating.

The city's Landmark Commission plans to apply to place the building on Landmarks Illinois' list of Ten Most Endangered Historic Places. The church is likely to need millions of dollars of repairs, more than the congregation of roughly 100 can afford.

Knox County Board and Landmark Commission member Paul Stewart says there is no guarantee of any funds being obtained to repair the structure. However, the statewide recognition might generate some interest in the building from outside of Galesburg.

Church moderator Steve Murmann estimates the cost of replacing the building's roof at between $500,000 and $2 million, depending on the materials used.

The church has a rich history. Dr. Edward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was once pastor of the church.
