Bureau County Village Fights to Hasten Superfund Cleanup
DE PUE, Ill. (AP) -- Thousands of visitors stream into DePue for the annual lakefront festival and championship powerboat races.

But the town in north-central Illinois in Bureau County is almost surrounded by a Superfund site that includes a polluted lake.

Now residents worry Lake DePue is becoming so shallow the village could lose the American Power Boat Association's PRO national championship. The contest generates thousands of dollars a year for the local men's club, which it spends on public service projects.

The village is urging the Illinois attorney general to investigate if the state Environmental Protection Agency has pushed hard enough for cleanups.

But environmental officials say the pace of cleanup in DePue is typical of Superfund sites in Illinois and across the country, where it can take years, even decades.
