Illinois Tornado Winds Measured 136 MPH
PETERSBURG, Ill. (AP) -- The National Weather Service says a powerful New Year's Eve storm that destroyed nearly two dozen homes in central Illinois was a tornado.

The weather service office in Lincoln says most of the damage was in the Lake Petersburg area in Menard County. The tornado's maximum estimated wind speed was 136 mph and it was classified EF3 on the Enhanced Fujita scale.

The weather service says the tornado's estimated maximum width was 200 yards and was on the ground for about 3.6 miles.

Tornadoes spawned by the same storm system killed several people in Arkansas and Missouri on Friday.
