District 205 Ups Estimate of Sales Tax Proceeds
Some potentially good news for the Galesburg School District as it continues to work on its $110 million Master Facilities Plan and, more specifically, how to pay for it.

District 205 Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, Guy Cahill, says an additional $200,000 annually could now be received from its share of proceeds from the recently-passed one percent increase in the Knox County sales tax, bringing its share up to $2.5 million annually.

Cahill tells WGIL assuming enrollment isn't affected negatively, which could decrease proceeds, he's confident the district will receive what's estimated.

"We're seeing employment pick up here a little bit in the county, the railroad has called back personnel and there's a ripple effect when the railroad is on good times that effects throughout the community. People are shopping and buying more goods, they're going to restaurants and buying food."

Cahill's original figures were based on the most recent figures available: state reports from the 2007 fiscal year. He says now the state has made Fiscal Year 2010 data available.

The sales tax increase proceeds are figured based on revenues from Knox County's quarter-cent sales tax for public safety, multiplied by four.
