Tax Increase Gets Victories in 2010
Two area school administrators from two different counties got the same result on Election Day.

The passage of referendums in both Knox and Warren Counties was among our top local stories of 2010.

Voters in both counties supported one-percent sales tax increases that, by law, can only pay for school construction-related expenses.

The Galesburg School District will use its proceeds to help pay for its Master Facilities Plan, and Assistant Superintendent Guy Cahill told WGIL on Election Day the local newspaper apparently had a bias about the referendum.

"We talked to the editorial board last week, we were told we had a snowball's chance in hell and I'm telling you that's one hell of a snowball we put together."

Monmouth-Roseville Superintendent Paul Woehlke told WGIL his district needs the money.

"A little less than about half the money will go toward annual operating costs that we can cover with the funds. That would really be a relief to our annual budget situation and the rest of the funds would be reserved for future projects in our facilities."

Monmouth-Roseville's proceeds were part of plan to help get the district out of debt. United Schools plan on building a new fieldhouse with their money. In Knoxville, they plan to use the proceeds in part for a new all-weather track. And ROWVA wants to build a new elementary school.
