District 202 Discusses Improvement Plan
Knoxville School District 202 is updating their District Improvement Plan.

The plan must be updated because the district did not meet adequate yearly progress standards under the No Child Left Behind Act.

The school board must approved the plan, but board President Bob Bogard didn't agree with a statement in the plan that Knoxville is a depressed area.

"That's ridiculous, that makes it look like Knoxville is falling apart. Knoxville's doing fine, we have a little bit unemployment but not depressed."

Board member John Putnam, however, said there was some sense to the phrase.

"When a third of our students parents are bringing in less than $20,000 a year, I think that is probably why we'd use the word depressed. I would tend to think that is depressed when a third of our students can't afford food and their parents are making less than $20,000 a year combined income."

Board members approved the plan at Wednesday night's meeting with some tentative changes like updated statistics and time lines for goals within the plan.
