Operation Lifesaver Launches New Campaign
(IRN)-Train and car collisions were up 18 percent in 2010 compared to 2009 in Illinois.

On average nationwide, there is one death per day caused by people ignoring railroad safety devices.

That increase has prompted Operation Lifesaver to launch a new safety campaign titled "Where's the Best Man."

Operation Lifesaver State Coordinator Chip Pew says the campaign includes a public service announcement that tells the story of a best man late to a wedding. In his hast to make it to the wedding, the man attempts to beat a train across a railroad crossing, but loses when his car is struck.

"With the growth of freight and commuter rail and the advent of high speed rail, Operation Lifesaver's safety message is more important than ever,” Pew said at a press conference at Chicago's Union Station.

The new PSA campaign targets 18-34 year olds.
