Fundraiser for Local Girl Helping Underprivileged in Guatemala
A Knox County girl preparing to help underprivileged children in a foreign country will get some more help making her trip a reality this weekend.

Kiera Spilman of Oneida has been able to collect hundreds of backpacks and school supplies that she will give to children in Guatemala. But Saturday morning, she'll talk about the trip at Discovery Depot Children's Museum.

Spilman tells WGIL she'd been itching to do something like her collection efforts.

"I hadn't done a project in awhile. I was praying and putting down ideas of what God wanted me to do next and my dad inspired me, he talks at the rescue mission and sometimes I go and play the piano and I just felt that God's calling me for mission work so I was just putting down some ideas of what God wanted me to do next."

And Spilman says that's how the idea for the backpack drive came up. She says the backpacks were initially going to be given to kids in Chicago, until she met some missionaries at her church.

Spilman will talk about the upcoming trip Saturday at 10:30am at Discovery Depot. And a dollar of each admission will be donated to Spilman's trip.
