Local County Among Tops in State for Deer Hunting
The numbers may be down, but the Illinois Department of Natural Resources says the now-over deer hunting season was still a pretty good one.

DNR officials say totals indicate that just under 182,000 deer were killed and harvested during the various forms of hunting season -- down several-thousand from the year prior.

But DNR spokesperson Chris McCloud says the totals can waver through the years.

"During the past seven years, we've added permit quotas, and allowed deer hunters to reach record harvest levels," McCloud said. "The record was reached in 2005-2006, when there was over 200,000 deer taken over all deer seasons."

That includes shotgun, muzzleloader, archery, and other types of deer seasons Illinois schedules. But McCloud says there still is one main draw every year.

"Certainly, firearm deer season is the most sought-after, it's the most participated in, and it's the most successful," McCloud said.

Fulton County had the second highest deer harvest number in the state with just more than 5,000 deer caught there. 2,800 deer were taken in Knox County during all the various seasons.
