New Online Newspaper to Be in "Zephyr's" Tradition
A new newspaper is coming to Galesburg, and with one important exception, it should read nearly just like the "Zephyr."

The Zephyr ceased publication last month after the passing of longtime publisher Norm Winick. Now, contributor Mike Kroll says, the "Galesburg Planet" has been formed that should carry on most of that sort of journalistic tradition, except that it will exclusively be online when it launches next month.

Kroll tells the WGIL Evening News there will be similarities and differences in the new Galesburg Planet.

"We've been able to get together almost all the original contributors to the 'Zephyr,' including some that hadn't contributed for awhile," Kroll said. "But, we've also expanded. One of the things that John [Ring] and I had as a goal when we set out doing this -- we wanted to be honoring the commitment and the basic expectation people have based on how Norm ran the 'Zephyr.'"

Kroll says the new venture will still be, in his words, fearless, but will also offer more conservative viewpoints than the often-labeled liberal Zephyr was. And, Kroll, says sports editor John Ring won't be alone in his coverage of local athletics.

Galesburgplanet.com should launch next month.
