G-HAS Receives Federal Grant for Bariatic Ambulance
The Galesburg Hospitals' Ambulance Service is celebrating.

G-HAS recently received a $110,000 federal grant to help pay for a new bariatric ambulance.

Director of Education for G-HAS Brian Anderson tells WGIL, the unit is not only safer for patients, but employees.

"With the safety of our staff in mind, back injuries, leg injuries, shoulder injuries; back injuries are represented at 47 percent of EMTs have back injuries just from lifting patients so we knew it would be a big problem and continue to be a problem and we needed a solution."

The new bariactric unit is equipped to carry obese patients up to 1,600 pounds and has a wench and ramp on the back to pull patients on the carts into the vehicle.

The cart in the unit is also able to support 1,600 pounds has a battery operated lift so employees do not have to light the weight on their own.
