Clinic Pharmacy to Close Over Contraceptive Sales
An issue that's been brewing since November between a clinic and the company that runs the clinic's pharmacy has come to a head.

The pharmacy inside the OSF Galesburg Clinic will be closing in early March. It's operated by Hy Vee. At issue: Catholic Church doctrine that essentially bans the use of contraceptives, which OSF spokesman Jon McKee says led their organization to try and rework their lease with Hy Vee. McKee says Hy Vee said no, so the pharmacy will close.

McKee tells WGIL a lease termination was sent to Hy Vee in November, though they didn't really want to send it.

"We're hoping to have more conversation with Hy vee to see if there's any way to keep that pharmacy open because it's been servicing not just the Galesburg Clinic and the patients through Galesburg but also helps with our hospital there as well."

For its part, Hy Vee spokesperson Ruth Comer tells WGIL it's as much an ethical issue for Hy Vee as it is for OSF.

"We have an ethical responsibility to our patients to fill prescriptions for them when they bring us a prescription or the prescription is written, our obligation as pharmacists is to fill that prescription for them."

Comer says anyone who uses the Hy Vee pharmacy at the Galesburg Clinic can go to any Hy Vee grocery store pharmacy and their records will be available.

McKee says another pharmacy can't open in the clinic for two years, so it will simply direct patients to the nearest pharmacy when requested, though it would like to see negotiations begin again.
