Emanuel Gets Support from Prominent Republicans
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Rahm Emanuel is getting public support from some top Republican lawyers in his legal battle to run for mayor of Chicago.

Former Governor James Thompson spoke out for Emanuel in a letter to the editor of The (Springfield) State Journal-Register. He was joined Jim Ryan and Tyrone Fahner, who both served as Illinois attorney general, and Dan Webb, chairman of the Winston & Strawn law firm.

The four disagree with a court ruling that says Emanuel can't run because he has been living in Washington, where he was White House chief of staff.

They say officials retain their residency if they leave the state temporarily but intend to return.

They note Adlai Stevenson was elected Illinois governor in 1948 even though he had been living elsewhere as an ambassador.
