Push for Sheen Sainthood Back On
(IRN)-The campaign to make Archbishop Fulton Sheen a saint that was put on hold, is back on again. Bishop Daniel Jenky of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria halted the eight year effort in November as the church tried to resolve a dispute over where the Archbishop's final remains should be. Monsignor Stanley Deptula with the Fulton Sheen Foundation says Bishop Jenky decided that both efforts can continue at the same time.

"The two of them, you know, like any good family, have to kind of wrestle through some hard questions, and the two of the will continue this discussion," Deptula said. "The important thing is that question is kind of bracketed in terms of the progress of the cause. This cause for sainthood is going to continue."

Deptula says the foundation never intended to abandon the effort but he says some in the Catholic Church had gotten that impression.

For now, Archbishop Sheen's tomb is in New York, where he spent much of his career and gained national fame for his radio and television commentaries.

Archbishop Sheen was born in El Paso and was ordained a priest in the Peoria Diocese. He died in 1979. His cause for canonization began in 2002.

Deptula says both efforts will continue now - but neither has a timetable.
