Ancient City Discovered Near St. Louis
(IRN)-An ancient East St Louis has the attention of state archaeologists.

Joe Galloy, coordinator of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey's American Bottom Field Station, says crews have discovered 800 year old ruins west of Cahokia Mounds.

"None of them have been investigated so intensively in a particular spot, and it's really a once in a lifetime opportunity to look at a very large portion of an ancient city," Galloy says.

It's the law that archaeological work precede construction projects such as the new Mississippi River bridge. Galloy's office is part of the University of Illinois' Institute of Natural Resource Sustainability.
