IL Service Groups Oppose Spending Limits
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Some groups that provide services to the poor and needy are opposing a proposal to limit growth in Illinois government spending.

A coalition of human service groups said Tuesday that the proposal would lock in current funding levels, which they consider dangerously low in many areas. They argue Illinois would not be able to pay for current services, let alone make improvements.

The proposal to limit spending growth is a constitutional amendment backed by Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

If approved, it would tie spending to the incomes of Illinois residents. Government spending could grow no faster than the average growth in income.

Opponents include AARP, Voice for Illinois Children, Lutheran Social Services and the Public Health Association.
