December Cold and Snowy in Illinois
(IRN)-Last month was exceptionally cold and snowy in Illinois.

The statewide average temperature for December was 24 degrees, 5.8 degrees below normal, making December 2010 the 12th coldest December in 115 years of record keeping, according to the Illinois State Water Survey, based at the University of Illinois in Champaign, which keeps track of climatological data.

The highest temperature for the month was reported at Carbondale with 65 degrees on Dec. 31. The lowest temperature for the month was -10, reported at Stockton on Dec. 14 and Elizabeth on Dec. 15.

Champaign had its snowiest December ever, with 20 inches. Other Central Illinois cities with near-record snowfall include Bloomington with 18.1 inches, the second snowiest December on record, and Peoria with 19.2 inches, the third snowiest December on record.

Galena got 30 inches of snow, making it the snowiest city in Illinois in December.
