Ryan Denied Bail to See Ill Wife
(IRN)-Prosecutors have denied imprisoned former Governor George Ryan bail to see his wife, and say he has already had an opportunity to visit with her.

Ryan's attorneys filed emergency motions with the Court of Appeals in hopes that he would be a free man during daytime hours to spend time with his wife. During the evening, Ryan would be required to stay in Kankakee County Jail.

In the response released Friday morning, the government says they do not dispute that Lura Lynn Ryan's medical condition is grave. They say recognizing the seriousness of her condition, Gov. Ryan was escorted to Riverside Hospital in Kankakee on Wednesday by the Bureau of Prisons. There Ryan visited with his wife for approximately two hours between 7:30 p.m. and 9:40 p.m.

"Thus, through normal prison procedures, Ryan has been able to visit with his wife," United States Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald wrote in the response.

Fitzgerald also points out the bail should not be granted because Ryan's appeal is not likely to result in a reversal of charges against him.

Mrs. Ryan has been hospitalized because of complications from chemotherapy. Ryan's attorney says she has "at most, weeks to live."

Ryan has served half of his 6½-year sentence for political corruption.
