New Speeding Law On the Books
Excessive speeders are the target of one of the hundreds of new laws that took effect with the new year.

The law, crafted by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, eliminates the possibility of court supervision for any driver convicted of speeding 40 miles per hour or more over the speed limit, allowing only for up to a year in jail, probation, or both.

White, who says he wants to make the state's roads as safe as they can possibly be, has tasked his traffic safety committee to look for other areas of the law that are too lenient on dangerous drivers.

"We're going to sit down at the beginning of the year," White said, "with my committee...to look at ways we can plug up some of these loopholes, and make sure that people who drive on our roads are responsible behind the wheel."

As for this new law, White says 40 percent of drivers in the state ticketed for going 100 miles per hour got court supervision, something he says he knew had to change.

The measure, when it was voted on in July, passed nearly unanimously in both houses in the General Assembly, with all of Knox County's lawmakers voting in favor of it. Only three state lawmakers, all in the House, voted no.
