Galesburg Public Library Director to Retire
The director of the Galesburg Public Library is ready to call it a career.

Pam Van Kirk announced at yesterday's Library Board of Trustees Meeting she'll be stepping down in May, leaving both plenty of time for a search for a replacement, and plenty of time for a strategic planning process to be undertaken, which will start January 22nd.

Van Kirk tells WGIL there were two reasons for her to retire now.

"My husband has already been retired for ten years and I figured if we're going to have anytime to spend and do some together, this was going to have to be the time and I think also we had a death in the family in 2010 and I think you kind on get a little more introspective to what your priorities are."

Van Kirk has worked at the library 16 years...the last 13 as director...and she was Children's Librarian before that.

Board president Martin Reichel will head a search committee that will find a replacement, which includes Laurie Muelder and Roger Peterson.

The library board yesterday voted to give two weeks of vacation pay to any employee who retires after at least 20 years of service, similar to a City of Galesburg policy. Van Kirk says four employees fit that category now.
