Thompson Fumes About Ryan's Treatment
(IRN)-George Ryan's lawyer says the ex-governor is getting shabby treatment.

Ryan is halfway through a 6½-year prison term for political corruption, but his wife is on death's door in Kankakee. Ryan was allowed a two-hour visit with her in the hospital this week. Lawyer Jim Thompson says that wasn't supposed to be blabbed out by federal prosecutors, who he says are equating the two-hour supervised release with a furlough or bail pending appeal.

Thompson also says the supervised visit was far short of what Ryan deserves, which Thompson claims is bail pending appeal, which would allow Ryan to see his wife until she recovers or dies, even if it would have meant Ryan had to check himself into the Kankakee County jail each night.

Federal prosecutors claim bail pending appeal is inappropriate because of the small likelihood of the appeal succeeding; Thompson argues that the government is wrong and that Ryan will win a new trial on appeal.
