Issues over Drug Testing for Different Knox County Employees
The Knox County Finance Committee seems to have an issue with the drug testing policy in place for employees of the Knox County Health Department.

Board of Health member Dr. Tommy West says the committee informed him last month the Health Department needs to implement random drug screening to match county-wide policies.

He says the committee determined there was risk without random testing. However, according to Dr. West, County Clerk Scott Erickson refuted that claim-- leaving him more puzzled.

"However that risk was felt to be in existence, in reality it was more of a perception than a reality," Dr. West said Thursday night. "Unless there is still further information to be released that we haven't received."

That's the next step for Dr. West and the board as they meet with county board members to attain some common ground.

West says he isn't against the random testing, but wants to ensure there's an open line of communication-- something he says has been nonexistent.

"It is a very confusing relationship between these two statutory county agencies, it always has been, and I don't know if it will be resolved otherwise."

The current Knox County Health Department policy was adopted in 2001. Dr. West says there's never been an issue till now.
