Waking Up with Freedom for MLK Day
The Knox College community "claimed a space" Monday morning inside Harbach Theatre to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

President Teresa Amott says the Knox family awoke Monday morning with their minds on freedom. She says the convocation was a time to reflect, connect, learn, and to be inspired.

"Today we are inspired by the ideas that Dr. King introduced to this nation through his decades of social sction, writing, and speaking," President Amott said. "Ideas to which he dedicated his life, and ideas for which he ultimately gave his life."

King was assassinated April 4th, 1968 on the balcony of a Memphis motel. He was leading a protest for striking garbage workers.

Amott says students at Knox are pioneers of the movement set forth by King and others.

"We walk in the footsteps of our founders, and of our students, our faculty, and staff-- who've engaged in the struggle for social justice for 175 years. This is surely a beloved community."

Knox College celebrated the MLK Holiday for a 11th strait year with Monday's service.
